A British Airways. também conhecida como BA. é a maior companhia aérea do Reino Unido.

No mercado alemão, esta companhia aérea fez-se representar por sua filial a Deutsche BA, cuja venda foi anunciada pela matriz em 2002. A companhia aérea easyJet recebeu a opção de compra da Deutsche BA em 31.03.2003. Em 2005, a BA anunciou uma redução considerável de suas ligações com a Alemanha, como por exemplo: a desativação da rota Londres-Hanôver. em 2006.

A BA possui participação acionária em outras companhias aéreas, como por exemplo: Iberia. com a qual fundiu-se em Abril de 2010. Até 2004, mantinha 18,25% de participação accionária na Qantas, à qual alugou sete Boeing 767. Também, além dos limites das Aliança Oneworld, a BA coopera estreitamente com outras companhias aéreas, dentre as quais - a Japan Airlines. Na África, a British Airways tem participação acionária na Comair. uma companhia aérea regional sul-africana.

Atualmente, a frota da British Airways é composta por 256 aeronaves dos seguintes modelos: Airbus A 318 (2), Airbus A 319 (44), Airbus A 320 - 200 (46), Airbus A321-200 (17), Boeing B-737 - 400 (19), Boeing B-747 - 400 (55), Boeing B-767 - 300ER (21), Boeing B-777 - 200ER (43), Boeing B-777 - 300ER (6), e Boeing B-777 - 200 (3).

História

A British Airways surgiu da união de quatro companhias aéreas pequenas, em 31.03.1924. Inicialmente esta companhia aéreas tinha o nome de «Imperial Airways». Em 1935, nasceu a British Airways da união de quatro companhias que ofereciam voos para todo o continente europeu.

Em 1937, com a fusão da Imperial Airways e a British Airways, foi fundada a BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation), considerada como a predecessora da British Airways.

A primeira British European Airways (BEA) foi fundada como a companhia estatal da Grã-Bretanha depois da guerra e oferecia voos dentro da Europa. O serviço de transporte em helicópteros British Airways Helicopters foi fundado em 1964 e assumiu também tarefas de salvamento de emergência no mar. No início de 1969, foi fundada a BEA Autotours (em seguida redenominada British European Airtours), que oferecia voos charter e voos de férias. Após a união da BOAC com a British Airways, em 01.04.1972, a BEA ainda existiu como divisão europeia independente até 01.04.1974. Em 1974, face a uma resolução governamental, a BOAC fusionou-se com a BEA e recebeu o nome de British Airways. A partir deste momento, a nova British Airways, aquela que conhecemos hoje, entrou em exercício como British Airways Operating Division. Antes, em 1970, a BEA havia comprado a Cambrian Airways e a BKS/Northeast a fim de assegurar as rotas de transporte regionais.

Desde os anos 90, a BA (como também outras companhias aéreas, uma vez estatal) vê-se exposta à concorrência com as companhias aéreas a baixo custo. No ano de recessão de 1992, foi a única companhias aérea internacional a não apresentar perdas. A British Airways iniciou a reelaborar o seu modelo de serviço em comparação às duas companhias aéreas europeias principais - a Lufthansa e a Air France_ se, por um lado, uma retirada parcial do mercado dos voos internos para a Europa, sobretudo pela forte concorrência da EasyJet e da Ryanair; e do outro lado, um reforço das rotas intercontinentais principalmente para a Ásia sul oriental e para os Estados Unidos atingindo, neste interim, quase a posição de monopólio. A British Airways foi a última companhia a suspender os voos aéreos com o Concorde, em 24 de Outubro de 2003.

No ano comercial de 2004/2005, a British Airways transportou cerca de 35 milhões de passageiros (no ano precedente: 37 milhões) para 222 destinos em 95 países. O volume de negócios era de 7,8 milhões de libras esterlinas (no ano precedente: 7,6 milhões de libras esterlinas). Apesar da redução do número de passageiros, os ganhos desta companhias aérea são de 415 milhões de libras esterlinas (no ano precedente: 230 milhões de libras esterlinas).

A British Airways possui também participação acionária em outras companhias aéreas, tal como na espanhola Ibéria (13,5%) e, em fins de 2004, participava como acionária da Qantas (18,25%), à qual alugou sete Boeing 767. Mas também além da aliança One World, a British Airways coopera estreitamente com outras companhias aéreas, entre as quais, a Japan Airlines. E em África, a British Airways possui uma participação acionária na sul-africana Comair.

A British Airways é membro da Oneworld como a American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Lan Airlines, Malév, Qantas e Royal Jordanian.

Em 08.04.2010 foi assinado o contrato de fusão entre a Iberia e a British Airways, que manterão seus nomes comerciais. A nova holding chamar-se-á Airlines Group.

Destinos

Atualmente, a malha aérea da British Airways, uma das maiores companhias aéreas do mundo, serve a mais de 300 destinos. Como membro da aliança «Oneworld Alliance», serve a mais de 600 destinos.

Entre esses destinos encontram-se metrópoles como Nova Iorque. São Francisco, Cidade do México. São Paulo. Rio de Janeiro. No Médio Oriente: Abu Dhabi. Muscat, Riade e Jedá. Entre os inúmeros destinos na Europa, estão: Paris-CDG, Hamburgo, Berlim, Oslo. Estocolmo, Frankfurt. Zurique, Madri e Lisboa.
