German low-cost airline Air Berlin was founded in 1978 and started operations year later. Today, the airline is German second largest airline (after Lufthansa) that employs about 10,000 people.

Regarding the number of carried passengers, Air Berlin is Europe’s seventh largest airline.

The company’s headquarters are based at Berlin airport Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, while its hubs are Berlin-Tegel Airport and Düsseldorf Airport.

The airline operates an extensive semi-low-cost network including intercontinental destinations in the United States, the Caribbean and the South East Asia as well as holiday destinations in the Mediterranean region, the Canary Islands and North Africa.

Air Berlin has codeshare agreements with 18 airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, Etihad Airways, Japan Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and Air Serbia.

Air Berlin fleet consists of 124 aircrafts and average age of the fleet is 5 years. The fleet consists of eight Airbus A319-100 aircrafts, 27 Airbus A320-200, 12 Airbus A321-200, 14 Airbus A330-200, 15 Boeing 737-700, 36 Boeing 737-800 and ten Bombardier Dash 8 Q400.

Air Berlin flies to 151 destinations in 40 countries worldwide, including Jamaica, Barbados, Cuba, United Arab Emirates and Thailand.

Serbian airline Air Serbia and Air Berlin started operating in joint flights in 2013.

31.03.2009. è stato ufficializzato durante la serata di ieri l'accordo di fusione tra AirBerlin e TUIfly. L'accordo che porterà all'ingrandimento della già amplia offerta di Airberlin, prevede uno scambio del 20 % delle quote azionarie e una suddivisione delle rotte, specializzando il vettore TUIfly nei voli charter.

12.01.2009. la compagnia low-cost tedesca ha annunciato che il principale azionista della compagnia, la società di investimenti olandese AI Aviation Cooperatief controllata dall’investitore russo Len Blavatnik, ha ceduto la propria quota del 18.94%. L'acquirente non è stato però reso noto.

05.12.2008. la compagnie low cost tedesca ha registrato per il terzo trimestre 2008 un utile netto pari a 45,6 milioni di euro. La migliore prestazione registrata nella storia della compagnia, frutto di un piano di contenimento dei costi che porterà ad una riduzione dei voli a breve raggio del 10% e del 30% per quelli a lungo raggio entro la fine del 2008.

Verranno sospesi voli su Cina, Mauritius e Sri Lanka, e il volo Dusseldorf -New York. Verranno ridotti del 10% anche voli a medio raggio, e la dimimuzione delle frequenze verrà compensata con aerei capaci di trasportare più passeggeri.

05.05.2008. dal 16 giugno Air Berlin si sposta da Milano - Bergamo Orio al Serio a Milano - Malpensa . partiranno per Berlino - Tegel e Dusseldorf 25 voli settimanali dal T1. Air Berlin offre ai passeggeri un servizio completo, con voli diretti per la Germania a partire da 29 euro (sola andata, comprensivi di snack e bevande analcoliche, e 20 kg di franchigia bagaglio imbarcato). Berlino e Dusseldorf si aggiungono al doppio volo giornaliero per Vienna già operato dal Terminal 1 dell'aeroporto di Malpensa dalla Niki, consociata della Air Berlin.

08.04.2008. Il gruppo Air Berlin, grazie all'attività del vettore Air Berlin e delle sussidiarie Ltu, Belair e Walter. ha trasportato a marzo 2008 oltre 2 milioni e centomila passeggeri: il 5,5% in più rispetto a marzo 2007.

Cathay Pacific's new routes – Dusseldorf, Zurich, Boston – continue long-haul market expansion

During the past decade, Cathay Pacific opened only three long-haul passenger markets that are still served today. But over 18 months in 2014 and 2015, Cathay will open six long-haul markets, with more likely to come. Three of those markets – Doha, Newark and Manchester – have already launched while Zurich opens in Mar-2015, Boston in May-2015 and, the most recent one announced, Dusseldorf, in Sep-2015.

The new long-haul markets bring Cathay's long-haul destination count to 30 and will help it continue to rebalance its network towards long-haul as short-haul flying becomes too competitive. Cathay's long-haul flying accounted for 63% of ASKs in 2006, 58% in 2011 and then a recent low of 55% in 2013. Cathay ended 2014 with 56% of ASKs in long-haul market, and by late 2015 this is due to be around 58%, according to the schedules it has filed.

Airberlin: new restructuring plan appears not radical enough as 3Q profitability slips

After narrowing its operating loss in 1H2014, airberlin's 3Q result was in profit, but at a lower level than last year in what is the seasonally strongest quarter. Unit revenues continued to fall and the airline was unable to reduce unit costs sufficiently to compensate for this (even after allowing for restructuring costs). Another heavy loss is on the way for FY2014.

Airberlin has also given a further update on its new restructuring programme. In spite of indications earlier this year that the new programme might lead to fundamental strategic change, there is also little, if anything, that appears radical in the plan. Airberlin will remain in the same business segments, but redouble its efforts to do the same things more efficiently. Moreover, it has not really addressed one of the key themes we have identified in our analysis of the airline for some time, namely establishing its core purpose.

"Etihad Airways Partners" Alliance accounts for 2.6% of global ASKs, 2.0% of seats

Once rejected by global alliances, Etihad Airways has turned around and established its own partnership platform, "Etihad Airways Partners". Partners has familiarity to existing alliances: commercial relations are emphasised, there are frequent flyer benefits and aircraft will have the Partners logo.

But Partners is not simply a de facto fourth global airline alliance. Etihad is starting small with six members. This view requires Etihad's standard disclaimer that it seeks not to be the biggest but to have the highest quality.

Partners in some ways is a branding of what Etihad has already done, and plans to continue to do, in the loyalty space. Consolidating loyalty programmes reduces costs while providing scale.

Airberlin's new codeshare with Alitalia is no substitute for the loss of Etihad codeshare routes

The new codeshare between airberlin and Alitalia, accompanied by a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement, reveals the guiding hand of Etihad Airways. It is another example of the growing cooperation among Etihad's equity investment airlines, whether current (airberlin) or prospective (Alitalia). This follows the launch of Etihad Airways Partners, which includes airberlin, but not yet Alitalia, although the latter it seems very likely to join after European Commission approval of Etihad's purchase of a 49% stake in it.

Both the new codeshare and Etihad Partners reflect a more liberal mood within the global alliances, allowing cooperation across alliances. Airberlin and Alitalia will remain members of oneworld and Skyteam respectively. The airberlin/Alitalia codeshare also comes just after an unexpected decision by Germany's federal aviation authority Luftfahrt Bundesamt (LBA) to reject airberlin /Etihad codeshare s on 34 routes this winter. These are around half of the routes operated under airberlin's codeshare with Etihad and have received approval in the past.

The LBA appears to have reversed its decision, at least temporarily. If it stands for the longer term, the past week looks like a case of one step forward, two steps back for airberlin.

Etihad 3Q2014: partner revenue reaches 27%, but clouded by Germany's codeshare rejection

Etihad Airways appears to have re-gained momentum in 3Q2014, with passenger revenue growth of 26% outpacing its 16% increase in ASKs. This reverses the trend from 1H2014 when 14% passenger revenue growth was outpaced by a 19% increase in ASKs. The strong third quarter coincides with what is the peak travelling season in many of Etihad's markets, and is also Etihad's busiest period for growth.

Partner revenue continues to drive the story, with partner revenue growing at 44%, faster than the 26% growth in organic passenger revenue. In the first three quarters of 2014, partner revenue reached USD823 million, setting Etihad well on course to achieve over USD1 billion of partner revenue in 2014. Partner revenue accounted for 27% of passenger revenue in 3Q2014, and 25% of passenger revenue in the first three quarters of 2014. This critical, and unique, revenue stream is clouded by growing protectionism, as seen with Germany's recent rejection of Etihad-airberlin codeshares.

Europe's airlines: 1H2014 results season shows improving trend, but cost reduction is the key driver

Europe's airlines appear to be following a course to improved profitability, based on the 1H2014 results of the largest publicly quoted airline groups. Profits remain slender in most cases, but margins are improving in aggregate. Individually, financial performance varied widely, with LCCs both leading (Ryanair) and lagging (Norwegian) the operating profit margin rankings in 1H2014.

The European market offers volume growth, but is characterised by price pressure, with RASK falling for the majority of the larger airline groups and this points to the need for additional caution in capacity growth. The LCCs collectively enjoyed higher growth than the FSCs in 1H2014 and also achieved a more stable RASK performance (although not in all cases).

Profit improvement is largely being achieved through cost savings and CASK reduction. Although fuel prices are high on a longer term historic perspective, they are enjoying a period of relative stability and this has helped the cost picture. Although Europe's airline sector remains only thinly profitable, these 1H results hold out the prospect of better full year results in 2014 versus 2013.

Air Berlin offer low-cost tickets aimed at vacation travelers and flexible tickets for business travelers.

Air Berlin operate flights between Germany and popular holiday destinations in southern Europe as well as flights between Germany and most western European countries.

Air Berlin also fly to the US. North Africa and Asia.

On short- and medium-haul European flights the least expensive Air Berlin tickets are the FlyDeal and FlyClassic fares. The main difference between these ticket classes is that the cheaper FlyDeal tickets can't be rebooked or cancelled.

FlyClassic tickets can be changed for a fee of € 70 and by paying any fare difference. However, no refund is issued if a FlyClassic ticket for a European flight is not used or cancelled.

One checked-in luggage item is included in the fare for FlyDeal and FlyClassic tickets. You can pre-book additional luggage items for € 70 each. The weight limit for checked baggage on European Air Berlin flights is 23 kg. There is a fee per kilogram for any excess weight.

For all tickets classes, you can check in a maximum of five pieces of luggage.

You may bring one cabin baggage item with a weight of no more than 8 kg and measurements not above 55 x 40 x 20 cm.
