The stunning Algarve is seemingly endless coastline, glorious sunshine and crystal clear waters. It's not hard to see why millions of tourists flock to this area of Portugal every year. Faro feels more Portugese than many of the other resort towns, while offering good transport to the more “touristy” destinations.
Nearby Albufeira is one of these "touristy" destinations. It is the best known, and most popular resort in the Algarve and attractive to both younger tourists and families. The quieter old town, with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses maintains the Portugese character of the resort. Alternatively, the bars, clubs and restaurants along the main strip provide a lively atmosphere for those that like the nightlife.
The beautiful, historical and atmospheric old town of Faro give the beaches a run for their money. Enjoy a glass of the famous Port and some fresh seafood at Faro's pretty marina. If it's dancing you're after then Rua do Prior and the Rua Conselheiro Bivar are the best night spots.
With a cathedral and museums as well as the Ria Formosa park, where you can see Pink Flamingos in their natural habitat, there is plenty for those searching for a more laid-back break. Faro and its surrounding area are famous for some of the best golfing in Europe and with year round sunshine, this could make the perfect holiday for someone who loves their clubs!

Stroll back in time in Cidade
Velha Faro’s walled old town (Cidade Velha) is a charming part of the city well worth spending the afternoon in. As you walk up through the Arco Vila, you’ll come to the main square where the grand old Cathedral stands. Climb the stone staircase to the top for brilliant panoramic views of Faro. Dotted around these small, winding streets you’ll find lots of little tavernas, serving a variety of dishes from traditional seafood to Portuguese tapas. Faro’s diverse history is explained within the magnificent walls of the Museo Municipal and there’s also a small art gallery displaying the works of contemporary artists from the country.
Relax on Praia do Faro
A twenty minute bus journey out of Faro takes you to Praia do Faro. Here, the lovely white sand goes for miles in both directions and the sea’s waves make for great fun to splash around in. As well as the usual beach-related activities, there are places along the sand where you can try your hand at water sports as well as a number of little cafes to grab some food - grilled sardines are a local favourite and worth a try for seafood lovers.
